Leland Library hosts series on Community Food Support

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

Leland Township Public Library is hosting a special two-part series to address food access challenges in our community, as part of the Leland Library Summinars. These events will explore some local efforts that are being made to ensure everyone has reliable access to healthy, nutritious meals.

Session 1: From the Heart – 5Loaves2Fish, Tuesday, July 23, 10 am

Join Michelle and Bill White and Emily Kanitz from Leland-based non-profit 5Loaves2Fish. Known for their compassionate “no questions asked” approach, they’ll discuss how volunteers come together weekly to create delicious meals for anyone that needs them. 5Loaves2Fish was created in 2020 to address hunger in our community during the Covid-19 pandemic. Michelle White emphasizes, “The big thing for us is to maintain dignity. You are in a circumstance. I don’t need to know your circumstances. I just want to be there to help you.”

Session 2: Coordinating Efforts and Empowering Communities, Tuesday, July 30, 10am

Explore how local organizations collaborate to improve healthy food access across our region. Featured speakers include Taylor Moore from Goodwill Food Rescue, Christina Barkel from Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, and Rachael Cougler from Northwest Food Coalition.

These community leaders will share insights on regional food security needs and their organizations’ resources. Learn about the innovative Farm 2 Neighbor program, which increases locally-grown food availability in area food pantries and meal sites while supporting local farmers.

Both sessions offer valuable insights into our community’s efforts to address food insecurity. Join us to learn how community members are working together to ensure everyone has access to nutritious meals.

There is no cost to attend the series, and registration is not required. All Summinars will be held in the Leland Township Library Munnecke Room and seating is on a first come, first served basis. More information can be found at lelandlibrary.org/summinars.
