The Leland Township Public Library and the Leelanau Historical Society are collaborating to host a program called “The Crib Shines On.” This program, featuring the North Manitou Light Keepers, aims to shed light on the history of The Crib, an iconic offshore lighthouse, as well as the ongoing restoration project undertaken by the North Manitou Light Keepers.
The Crib, also known as the North Manitou Shoal Station, is an active offshore lighthouse situated approximately one mile from North Manitou Island. Since its construction in 1935, The Crib has served as a vital navigational beacon, marking a shallow shoal in the Manitou Passage, a significant maritime channel. Previously occupied by members of the US Coast Guard until 1980, the lighthouse has since been acquired by the non-profit organization North Manitou Light Keepers through an auction in 2016.
“The Crib Shines On” is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 1, at 1 pm in the Munnecke Room at the Leland Township Public Library. The North Manitou Light Keepers will provide an engaging presentation addressing the history of The Crib and detailing the ongoing restoration efforts. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to gain insights into the significance of this offshore lighthouse and its role in maritime heritage.
In addition to the lecture, an optional add-on tour will be available immediately following the program, weather permitting, from 3-6 pm. Priced at $150 per person to cover the cost of the boat, this tour will provide up to 10 participants an up-close exploration of The Crib and its surroundings. Those interested can register for the tour by emailing tours@northmanitoulightkeepers.org. Registration for the program itself is not required and there is no cost to attend.
