The Glen Arbor Arts Center will host an informational gathering to share news of the GAAC’s 2020 exhibitions—themes and companion programs—on Saturday, July 27 from 11 am-noon at the Glen Arbor Arts Center, 6031 S. Lake Street.

Gretchen Rose will hold two events in Glen Arbor for her children’s book Dune Dragons. On July 26, from 10 am-noon, Cherry Republic will host a book signing/reading, and cherry-pit spitting contest; On Aug. 14 at 11:15 am, the Cottage Bookshop will host a book signing/reading and dragon egg-painting event.

The 2019 Biennial Home Tour is sponsored by the Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library. The tour includes five residences encompassing diverse styles and locations: two homes on the Crystal River (one a warm lodge style and the other an artful contemporary style), an expansive home on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, a beautifully designed home on Fisher Lake, and a charming Homestead duplex.

The Leelanau Historical Society is pleased to announce their new exhibit “You are Here: Maps and Roads of Leelanau” is open to the public. The exhibit is on display in the Norbert Gits Family Gallery and features maps ranging from 1850-1960. A display of early surveying equipment is also highlighted in the exhibit.

On July 23, the Running Bear 5K Run/Walk & ½ Mile Kids’ Run takes off for its 13th year. What makes a beautiful summer day even better? Spending it with family and friends who take the challenge. You can run or walk the 5K.

Jazz North is a “little” big band. And on Sunday, July 21, Jazz North occupies Lake Street Studio Stage in the next Manitou Music concert. The concert begins at 8 pm.

Parallel 45, a new professional theatre company, performing at a state-of-the-art, outdoor stage on the grounds of the rejuvenated Traverse City Civic Center, has strong roots in Leelanau County.

Currie’s Furniture in Traverse City recently donated 10 new, high-quality bed mattresses to the Glen Lake Fire Department—six for the Glen Arbor crew and four for Empire. The double-sided mattresses, which are made in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, cost approximately $330 each.

For visitors looking for something to do beyond the dunes in the National Lakeshore, they might consider having fun in the cultural areas of the park. Historic Sleeping Bear, an official partner of the National Lakeshore offers summer activities for the family at the Port Oneida Farms Heritage Center/Olsen Farm 4 miles north of Glen Arbor, located on the Heritage Trail.
