Historic Sleeping Bear hosts summer activities

For visitors looking for something to do beyond the dunes in the National Lakeshore, they might consider having fun in the cultural areas of the park. Historic Sleeping Bear, an official partner of the National Lakeshore offers summer activities for the family at the Port Oneida Farms Heritage Center/Olsen Farm 4 miles north of Glen Arbor, located on the Heritage Trail. Get to know the park’s rural historic areas by joining up on one of their biking, driving, walking, or horse and wagon tours.
Driving Tours to various historic farms will be led by retired national park ranger, Bill Herd on Wednesdays at 10 am from July 10 through August 7. Tours will kick off with a tour of the Faust Log Cabin on Inspiration point July 10. Following weeks are Ken-Tuck-U-Inn in the Platte River area; Barn2Barn in Port Oneida, and Port Oneida Inside. Tours are free but donations are appreciated.
Their popular Horse and wagon tours in the Port Oneida agricultural community will start up again on Tuesdays at 4:30 and Thursdays at 3 pm and 4:30, July 9-August 22. Advanced reservations are required by calling 231-334-6103. Cost is $20 per adult, $12 per child ages 4-12, and free for children 3 and under. Calling at least 24 hours ahead is encouraged.
Historic Sleeping Bear and Friends of Sleeping Bear are teaming up to combine their respective walking programs—“Heritage Walkers” and “Walk in the Park”—Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 9 through August 29 from 10-11 am. Each day will be a different location around the park. Walkers can enter each time they walk for an August 1 prize drawing for a free registration to the Port Oneida Run, August 3.

Spend a fun afternoon with your friends playing old-fashioned community lawn games on Sundays from 2-4 pm July 14—August 18, including croquet, cornhole, box hockey, horse shoes and more. The center’s barn, and exhibits with history hunts for children are open six days a week – Tuesday through Saturday 11-5, and Sunday 1-4 starting July 8.For details on all tours and programs, visit www.phsb.org.
