Historical Society unveils “Maps and Roads of Leelanau”

From staff reports

The Leelanau Historical Society is pleased to announce their new exhibit “You are Here: Maps and Roads of Leelanau” is open to the public. The exhibit is on display in the Norbert Gits Family Gallery and features maps ranging from 1850-1960. A display of early surveying equipment is also highlighted in the exhibit.

In addition to the map exhibit, a 7-minute video titled “This Basket is My Ancestor” is now on view in the Traditional Anishnaabek Arts Room. The video tells the story of black ash basket making from the perspective of two local Elders. The society is proud to have worked on this project with former curator Laura Quakenbush and filmmaker Rich Brauer.

We invite the public to visit the museum Tuesday-Friday 10 am-4 pm and Saturday 10 am-2 pm. Come learn about the rich history of the Leelanau Peninsula and its people.

The mission of the Leelanau Historical Society Museum is to preserve and share the history of Leelanau County to inspire others to explore and interpret the past for future generations to learn and appreciate.
