Leland’s annual 2019 Friends of Fishtown 5K will be held Saturday, July 20, at 9 am in Historic Fishtown. Starting and finishing in Fishtown, the route takes participants through the beautiful streets of Leland, and along the Leland River.
The mean age of our local cherry growers is nearing 60. The future generation of cherry farmers, i.e. those 40 and under, number about a dozen, and the path ahead is not looking clear.

Empire will host its annual Anchor Day celebration on Saturday, July 20. It is a day of fun for the whole family, put on by the Empire Area Community Center. The event commemorates the raising of the now-famous anchor from Lake Michigan in July 1977.

For the past 19 summers, Riverside Shakespeare has entertained Traverse City folks and those in Leelanau and Antrim counties with performances of William Shakespeare’s plays. For this 20th season, Riverside Shakespeare will be presenting “Much Ado About Nothing,” under the direction of co-founder Brian Dungjen.

The Empire Village Council will hold a special meeting on July 17 to consider a moratorium on processing any zoning permit. Midwest V, which frequently leases its buildings to Dollar General, approached an Empire landowner with a purchase offer to acquire six acres in a mixed use, commercial-residential district of Empire.

Across Leelanau County, more and more businesses are getting started, or revitalized by young entrepreneurs. Some are longtime locals, some are “boomerang” locals, back from years away to better discover their desire to come back home, and some are folks lured away from their past lives in big cities to the smaller, welcoming communities of northern Michigan. In Suttons Bay, a clear resurgence in young business owners and operators brings a freshness to an already vibrant small town on Grand Traverse Bay.
