The Glen Lake Library will host a presentation by Sleeping Bear Dunes park ranger Jim Del Sasso, a 40-year veteran of the Park Service, on Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m. “Ranger Jim” has worked in parks ranging from Denali to the Everglades, spending the last 20 years patrolling our local lakeshore. He will share stories, insights and pictures from his long career just weeks before his scheduled retirement in July. The presentation will take place at the Empire Township Hall.
The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host a special exhibit called “Footprints in the Sand – Tracing the Path that Led to the Birth of the Village of South Manitou Island” from April 4 through May 17. The exhibit tells the story of the Village using historical photographs, maps, drawings and narrative. The display opens with a reception on Friday, April 4 from 6 t0 8 p.m. Refreshments will also be served. It then can be viewed during regular library hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

The Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library will hold their annual Used Book Sale August 7-9 at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. This three-day fundraising event offers gently used and new books, games, puzzles and recordings. Here is the schedule.
The Glen Lake Library will host a performance by Song of the Lakes on Thursday, July 25, at 7 p.m. The concert is based on the classic children’s book Paddle to the Sea, written by Holling C. Holling, originally published in 1941. This concert will feature original music performed by the band, along with narration by Norm Wheeler. Children and adults are invited to this free performance, which will be held at the Empire Township Hall. The Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library host their biannual Home Tour on Thursday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As one of the Friends’ primary fundraisers, the event showcases five distinctive Glen Lake area homes.
The Glen Lake Library in Empire has kicked off its summer reading program on Thursday mornings at 11 a.m. Programs on the schedule include nature presentations, puppet and ventriloquist shows, and a special concert by local folk music favorites Song of the Lakes. The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host a presentation by Loreen Niewenhuis, author of the newly published book A 1000-Mile Great Lakes Walk, on Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m. Niewenhuis’ account of her epic hike along the shores of all five Great Lakes offers unique insights into the people, history, culture and environment of our unique region. The presentation will be held at the Empire Township Hall, across the street from the library. Copies of her new book will be available for sale.
This week, under little fanfare, Leelanau County celebrated it’s 150th birthday. That is, on Feb. 27, 1863, the Michigan State Legislature create the county of Leelanau with three townships — Centerville, Glen Arbor and Leelanau. The peninsula that looks like the mitten’s pinky finger had previously been part of Grand Traverse County (along with what is now Benzie County).
The Glen Lake Community Library will host a special story hour featuring Maggie van Galen, author of the new children’s book The Adventures of Keeno & Ernest: the Banana Tree. In this charming picture book, two young jungle friends — a mischievous monkey and a clever elephant — encounter more adventure than they had planned on their search for the perfect banana. This will be a homecoming for the Massachusetts-based author, who grew up in northern Michigan.
