The Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library host their biennial Home Tour on Thursday, July 23, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. As one of the Friends’ primary fundraisers, the event showcases five distinctive and diverse Glen Lake area homes.

The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will begin it’s summer season of children’s programs with a presentation on Thursday, June 18, at 11 a.m. by Al Declercq, author of Bernida: a Michigan Sailing Legend. Declercq’s book, about the sailboat that won the inaugural Port Huron to Mackinac Island race in 1925, was selected as a Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan.

After a one-year hiatus, the Glen Lake Library will once again host a poetry contest as part of the 2015 Empire Asparagus Festival. Submit your asparagus-inspired verse by Thursday, May 14. Poems can be dropped off at the library; mailed to Glen Lake Library, PO Box 325, Empire, MI 49630; or emailed to info@glenlakelibrary.net. Be sure to include your contact information with your poem. Contestants are encouraged to come present their own poetry at the reading on Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 pm. Prizes will be awarded in both adult (age 18+) and children’s categories.

The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host a presentation by Amanda Wetzel of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum on Tuesday, March 31, at 7 p.m., at the Empire Township Hall. Wetzel will discuss the history of two aircraft carriers that served on Lake Michigan between 1943 and 1945, providing critical training for thousands of World War II pilots, including future president George H. W. Bush.

A special holiday tradition continues, Nov. 12 until Dec. 14, as the Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library kick off their annual call for children’s books. The Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Glen Lake School’s “Parenting Communities and Early Head Start Program”, are once again collecting donations of new children’s books for children whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season.

The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host a presentation for senior citizens on basic iPad and iPhone operation on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. Andrew Clements, a local website designer, will demonstrate key functions of these popular mobile devices, and address questions from users. There is no charge for this program, which be held in the library meeting room. Attendees should bring their fully charged iPad and iPhones. The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host a presentation by Dr. Julianna Wilson, an entomologist at Michigan State University, on Tuesday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Wilson has spent the last 10 years studying wild bees in various cropping systems in Michigan, and is currently a research and extension specialist in tree fruit integrated pest management, which includes collaborating on a multi-state and multi-crop pollination project.

The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will begin another season of Stories & More, a weekly preschool program, on Thursday morning, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. These engaging hour-long sessions are led by Joanne “Yogi” Beare, a retired daycare provider and early childhood educator. Each weekly gathering features stories, songs, crafts and play, and also introduces kids and their caregivers to the many resources available at the library.

The Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library will hold their annual Used Book Sale August 6-8 at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. This 3-day fundraising event offers gently used and some new books, games, and puzzles, as well as recordings. It is scheduled as follows.
