The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) will show artwork by its summer instructors in a pop-up gallery in the GAAA’s temporary offices at 6654 Western Avenue in Glen Arbor. The work of 14 GAAA instructors will be on display July 5 to August 31.

The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) brings Wisconsin-based blues powerhouse The Jimmys to the Sleeping Bear Dunes for the annual Manitou Music Festival Dune Climb Concert, Sunday, July 9, at 7 p.m.

This Independence Day, Leonard Thoreson and his wife Sally (Salome) will be the honorary parade marshals in Glen Arbor’s Fourth of July Parade. Come cheer them on. The parade starts at Glen Haven around noon and winds down M-109 and M-22 through the heart of town.

Come One, Come All to the community July 4 Flag Raising program in honor of the 241st birthday of America’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to be held Tuesday, July 4, at Old Settlers Picnic Grounds. This patriotic tradition has been organized by the Glen Lake Woman’s Club since 1970.

The Northport Community Band kicks off the Glen Arbor Art Association’s 2017 Manitou Music Festival season on Monday, July 3, at 7 p.m. with a musical evening celebrating Independence Day. This concert of patriotic and march favorites takes place on the Old School House lawn located in Glen Arbor on M-22 directly across from the Glen Arbor Township Hall.

The Leelanau School featured a special graduation speaker during its commencement ceremony on June 3. Alum Arya Khoshnegah, together with his sister Laila, left Iran as teenagers and enrolled at the private boarding school north of Glen Arbor, just before the 1979 revolution that changed the fortunes of their family and their country. Leelanau, which specializes in experiential learning and small class sizes in a beautiful setting, graduated 19 seniors who hail from 11 states. Distinguished alumni have included survivors of wars and natural disasters, children of statesmen and accomplished actors.

Endurance Evolution puts on some of the best races in northern Michigan. This year, the USATF-certified Glen Arbor Solstice Half Marathon and 5k takes place on June 17. The half marathon starts at 7 a.m. and the 5k starts 10 minutes later. As you may have guessed, this annual event takes place right around the summer solstice. The solstice marks the onset of summer, one of the jolliest times of the year in Northern Michigan. Running a race in Glen Arbor is the perfect way to kick off the start of this long-awaited season.

When you greet Glen Arbor’s ubiquitous cottage remodeler, musician, and leader of the Cabin Fever Band, he holds out a polished rock. It is probably a Lake Superior agate with a brilliant center full of wispy clouds surrounded by concentric rings of layered complexity in a warm colorful glow. You soon realize that the character of Tom Fordyce is just the same.

“So like, what do you guys do out there?” We get this question a lot, often loaded with presumptions of who we are and what we like to do. Which is fair. Let me be clear, my wife and I, a young married couple in our mid-20s, are outliers.

The Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its successful Bike-n-Ride program. BATA’s Bike-n-Ride service has been helping cyclists enjoy bike trails in Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties for five years. This years’ service started Saturday, May 20 and runs through the summer and fall until October 22.
