Glen Arbor pedestrians and shopping tourists have one more reason to walk west on M-109 this spring. Just past the Good Harbor Grill and the Pine Cone ice cream shop, Katy and Matt Wiesen have opened the clothing apparel store Coastal in the space formerly occupied by Great Lakes Tea & Spice. The tea & spice shop hopscotched west to the other side of Ruth Conklin Gallery, and now shares a space with Arabella Concepts jewelry store.

Spring arrives in full flower when Center Gallery in Glen Arbor opens its 2017 season with “The Flower Show,” May 26. This three-person exhibit showcases two different approaches to floral paintings by Grand Rapids resident Margo Burian and Lauren Everett Finn of Honor; and the porcelain pottery of Matt McGovern of Cedar. An artist’s reception is May 26, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery, 6023 S. Lake St.

Glen Arbor based Great Lakes Tea & Spice (GLTS) has moved four doors west from its original location, which dates back to 2006 — starting with a 10 x 10 seasonal “shed-boutique”. The retail tea, spice, olive oil and balsamic vinegar (as well as many other amazing findings from throughout the world) purveyor is a few steps closer to the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail entrance. When asked why the move just 50 yards further down on M-109, co-owner Chris Sack responded, “This end of Glen Arbor’s retail-district is just starting to get as energized as it was prior to the economic crash of 2008. We needed a space to operate under one roof, instead of being spread out with our retail store in Glen Arbor and our warehouse space in Empire; we were lucky to find it!”.

Online registration for the ninth annual M22 Challenge will go “live” at 8 a.m. on March 1. The event, to be held Saturday, June 10, near the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb, is capped at 900 athletes and in the past several years has reached capacity within 15 minutes.

Disagreement prevails within the Glen Lake Fire Department (GLFD) over whether the firefighters should have organized one year ago. They filed a grievance a week later, leaving many to wonder why. So, when Glen Arbor Township and Local 5086 of the International Association of Fire Fighters finalized their first contract on Sept. 1, 2016, people wondered if the issues behind the unionizing and grievance were resolved? And how will this affect the community?

They met in the summer of 2012. Still in college, she had come north from a suburb of Detroit to take a job as a waitress at the Cove in Leland.
