A special holiday tradition continues, Nov. 15-17, as the Glen Lake Community Library holds its 19th annual call for children’s books. The Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Glen Lake School’s “Parenting Communities” program, is once again collecting donations of new children’s books for children whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season.

The Glen Lake Community Library will present a free documentary film, The Barn Raisers, on Friday, November 17 at 7 p.m., in the Empire Township Hall. The film explores Midwest barns through the lens of architecture, building methods, barn styles, and materials: what they tell us about the people who built them, the life they lived, and the role these “country cathedrals” played in the settling and building of our country.

Cherry Republic president Bob Sutherland and his sons Colebrook and Hawthorn bite into Michigan Apple Crunch Day on Oct. 25 at Glen Lake School. The event was sponsored by Cherry Capital Foods, Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, and the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, which celebrated 15 years of catalyzing the farm to school movement in northern Michigan.

The Leelanau School, the experiential learning private high school in Glen Arbor, has hired Robert C. Hansen to be its head of school — the 15th in Leelanau’s history.

Superintendent Scott Tucker is pleased to announce that Veterans Day Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11-12, will be celebrated as fee-free days for all Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore visitors in honor of U.S. veterans and current members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Come and experience your park during this special fee-free weekend or any day! The National Lakeshore is open year-round.

Cherry Republic plans to hire as many as 200 additional “elves” to help meet the anticipated gift-giving demand at its Empire Distribution & Fulfillment Center this holiday season. The workers yet to be hired are in addition to the seasonal retail staff and mail order phone representatives already lined up for this busy time of year.

The League of Women Voters Leelanau County (LWVLC) will host a forum entitled Local Consequences of Worker Shortages in Leelanau County on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at noon in the lower level community meeting room of the Leelanau County Government Center.

The Empire Area Community Center will hold a free community concert at the Cedar Tavern from 4-6 p.m. on Oct. 29 to benefit the Empire Area Emergency Fund. Admission is free.

On Friday, Oct. 20, new Sugar Loaf resort owner Jeff Katofsky told the Glen Arbor Sun that he hopes to build a 4-star, year-round resort at Sugar Loaf but wasn’t yet sure about whether it would include downhill skiing.
