Port Oneida 5K, 10K support Sleeping Bear Dunes

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

Historic Sleeping Bear will hold its ninth annual Port Oneida Heritage Run/walk on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Port Oneida Farms Heritage Center/Olsen farm. The fundraiser for the nonprofit partner of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore supports preservation of the National Park’s historic structures.

Three races to choose from include the Tiller’s 10K, Homesteader’s Hardcore 5K, and the new Farmer’s Flat and Fast 5K, plus the Kid’s ¼ mile Schoolhouse Dash. All courses wind through the beautiful landscape of the historic 1800s Port Oneida farming community. The Farmer’s 5K adds an easy out and back flat route on the aggregate Heritage Trail. Strollers and dogs on leash are welcome on that race. Last year’s hardcore 5K male overall winner was Owin Hays with a time of 21:09, and female winner was Maddy Dohm at 22:48. The original hardcore 5K has been enjoyed by families and all ages, however it and the 10K will especially appeal to hard core runners due to the rolling hills. The 10K weaves through gravel back roads, on trails, and a portion of Lake Michigan beach pending water level and nesting birds. Last year’s overall winners for the 10K were Matt Nester at 38:15 and Jacqueline Sommer at 47:29.

There are unique awards for eight age categories, music, and food. Bring a blanket to spread on the park lawn while you enjoy post-event edibles and activities. Food will be available for purchase throughout the morning for spectators. Schoolhouse Dash is $5. All other races are $30, and $35 after August 1st. Walk-ons are welcome. The race starts and ends at the Olsen farm, located near the intersection of Port Oneida road and M-22 at 3164 W Harbor Hwy (M-22) just four miles north of Glen Arbor.
