VanVoorhis exhibits relationship with Sleeping Bear

From staff reports

Painter Catherine VanVoorhis brings the accumulated knowledge of her three-decades long relationship with the Sleeping Bear Dunes to canvas. An exhibition of VanVoorhis’s take on Leelanau County’s iconic natural features will be exhibited at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. This show runs Aug. 11-17. An artist’s reception opens the exhibition on Friday, Aug. 11, 6-8 p.m.

“For me, a landscape painting is a portrait of a specific place and the plants and terrain of that location,” VanVoorhis said. “I want to learn about and respect each subject that I paint. This comes from a lifetime of wilderness camping, bird watching, studying plants, and reading about nature.”

VanVoorhis, an instructor at the Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, teaches drawing, color theory, painting and drawing. Center Gallery is open daily 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
