Empire Asparagus Festival turns 20
From staff reports
The Empire Asparagus Festival— once lovingly dubbed one of the world’s weirdest festivals by MSN.com—returns for its 20th year on June 3. The fête includes local asparagus eats, great music, and fun activities for all generations.
The Asparagus Festival begins with the Kick-Yer Assparagus 5k Fun Run/ Walk at 10 am, and continues with an asparagus recipe contest at noon at the Town Hall, and the Ode to Asparagus poetry contest at 2 at the Glen Lake Library. (Winning recipes and poems will be featured in the June 15 edition of the Glen Arbor Sun.) The food-drink-music fair on Front St from noon until 6 pm features asparagus dishes served by Mel & Fell, Art’s Tavern, Plevas, and Shipweck Cafe; drinks by Right Brain Brewery, Lake Ann Brewery, and St. Ambrose Cellars; and live music by Deep Water Samba Band, 5th Gear Band and Andre Villoch. Admission is $5; children 16 and under are free.
In addition, “Miss Asparagus on Stilts” will appear between 2-4 pm, Gordon Russ performs his Children’s Magic Show from 3-4 pm, and the Empire Area Museum will have an open house from 1-2 pm.
