Glen Arbor Art Association opens registration for plein air paint out
From staff reports
The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) will open artists’ registration for the annual Plein Air Weekend on Tuesday, March 31. Member artists are invited to register beginning on March 31 at 9:30 a.m.; non-members may register beginning April 3. Only online registration will be accepted. According to GAAA Director, Peg McCarty, registration for the popular Saturday, Aug. 1 Paint Out fills quickly. A waiting list will be taken once the Saturday event registration has filled.
The Plein Air Weekend is scheduled for July 30-August 1. Each year the event attracts artists from across Michigan and throughout the Midwest. Now in its seventh year, the GAAA event has become one of Michigan’s largest, and most popular, plein air festivals.
This summer, the three-day event will kick off Thursday, July 30, with a new event, the Sundowner. This new opportunity invites artists to paint in the evening and capture the sunset and changing light over Lake Michigan. On Friday, July 31, artists will “Paint the Town” in Glen Arbor during the afternoon Quick Draw. Paintings from both the Sundowner and Paint the Town will be exhibited at the Quick Sale at the Glen Arbor Township Hall Friday, July 31 from 5-6 p.m. No advance registration is required for these events. The public will be invited to watch the artists art work.
On Saturday, Aug. 1, 60 pre-registered artists will set up their easels around the Glen Lake and Sleeping Bear Dunes area for the day. Artists may enter up to two paintings in the juried competition. The paintings will be exhibited and available for sale at the Wet Painting Sale and Reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Art Association, 6031 South Lake Street, Glen Arbor.
“The aim and challenge for the artists is to work quickly to complete a painting, even as the sun moves across the sky and conditions change,” says Director Peg McCarty. “The Plein Air Week-end has become GAAA’s signature summer event for visual artists and art patrons. It supports the mission of GAAA which is to promote the arts in the Glen Lake area — and that includes providing opportunities for artists to exhibit and sell their works.” A portion of the sales benefits the art association’s programs.
