Leland hosted its first art walk for the Consenses Walks project earlier this month, a challenge for artists of varying mediums living in the same community to work together in an artistic game of “Telephone.” Leland was chosen for the experimental project’s second location by founder Sally Taylor, who led a group of approximately 125 people on a stroll around town to decode the chain of seven artists’ work and find out what common threads wove their way through the links. The adventure began with Leland summer resident and sculptor Charlie Hall’s Infinite Disc, located on the front lawn of the Old Art Building.

Chef Abra Berens

Chef Abra Berens has worked in Chicago, Ann Arbor, even Ireland. But she hasn’t forgotten her time in Leelanau County. That’s reflected in her continuing visits and efforts here. It’s also part and parcel of her cookbooks, including her latest, “Pulp: A Practical Guide to Cooking with Fruit,” which published last month. Like its predecessors, the book concentrates on one of the food groups. In this case, that’s fruit, complementing vegetables and grains. Berens will preside over a series of 50th anniversary dinners at Mawby Vineyards July 23, Aug. 20 and Sept. 17. She will also hold a book signing at Horizon Books on July 22.

Michelle Jahraus and her dog arrived at Good Harbor beach before dawn. She made it a point to get there early enough to choose the perfect spot to set up her easel and paint supplies in time to capture the sunrise over Lake Michigan. Jahraus, a Maple City resident, had just begun to block in the scene when she felt a powerful whoosh of air accompanied by the sound of beating wings. She looked up to see a bald eagle flying away from a perch right above her head. It is moments like this that draw artists to the act of en plein air, a French expression meaning “in the open air” and the practice of painting outdoors, on location.

A cultural hub of the Leelanau community since its establishment in 1922, the Old Art Building (OAB) in Leland celebrates its Centennial birthday through 2022 with an ambitious lineup of events including four stage productions, 10 art exhibits, 15 musical performances, a varied selection of classes for children and adults, and other special events.
