The Glen Lake Community Library will host a special community screening of Free for All: The Public Library on Wednesday, April 9, at 7 pm—as part of its National Library Week celebration. The film tells the story of the quiet revolutionaries who created a civic institution where everything is free and the doors are open to all. Director Dawn Logsdon travels the United States, discovering historic and modern-day figures, especially women, who contributed to the library’s integral position within democracy.
Last year marked the 26th year that the Friends of the Glen Lake Library has collected and distributed donations of new children’s books to young readers in Leelanau County. 380 books were distributed to 11 classes at the Glen Lake Elementary School, Parenting Communities, the Leelanau Children’s Center, the Benodjenh Children’s Center, Family Daycare Homes and preschoolers attending the weekly Story Hour at the Glen Lake Library.
A Special Holiday Tradition continues on Nov. 15 as the Friends of the Glen Lake Library kick off their annual call for children’s books. The Friends are once again collecting donations of new children’s books for those whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season. Any family can find themselves in hard times and the goal is to make sure the children still have some holiday joy in the form of a special book. The list is compiled from Glen Lake Elementary School, Parenting Communities, The Benodjenh Child Center, Leelanau Children’s Center and Family Daycare Homes and is available at the Glen Lake Library in Empire and at the Cottage Book Shop in Glen Arbor.
The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host a screening of the new documentary film Discovering Catharine on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 5 pm. The film explores the life and legacy of Catharine Waugh McCulloch (1862-1945) of Evanston, Illinois, an early female attorney and a fervent champion of women’s rights. On Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7 pm, the Glen Lake Library will host peace scholar and activist David Cortright, who will discuss parallels between the United States’ war in Iraq and the current conflict in Gaza.
The Aspen House is an initiative that hopes to bring a coworking space with flexible, hourly childcare to Leelanau County in the coming year. Kendall Rose is a small business owner and parent of a 4- and 2-year-old who became inspired to start The Aspen House in the post-pandemic aftermath when finding part-time, affordable childcare became all but impossible. Together with the Glen Lake Community Library in Empire, she is piloting the Work & Play Pop Ups with three summer dates, on Mondays from 10 am-12 pm (June 17, July 22, and August 19). The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host author David Roll in conversation with Mel Laracey on Tuesday, July 2, at 7 pm. Roll, the author of Ascent to Power: How Truman Emerged from Roosevelt’s Shadow and Remade the World, will be in town to discuss his new book with Laracey, PhD., professor of history at University of Texas, San Antonio, and a summer resident in Empire.

Author and environmentalist Jane Elder will discuss her newly published book, Wilderness, Water & Rust, at the Glen Lake Community Library in Empire on Thursday, May 30, at 7 pm. The book weaves together memories from her life in the upper Midwest with nearly 50 years of environmental policy work, presenting a unique insider’s perspective into the quest to protect the Great Lakes.
The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host Ali LeJeune, a Traverse City based professional organizer and home simplification expert on Monday, May 20, at 7 pm. LeJeune will discuss how to bring calm and clarity to your spaces, exploring both the emotional and practical aspects of managing our belongings. Utilizing a unique combination of philosophies, LeJeune helps people face the sometimes daunting task of bringing order to their homes and offices.
