Glen Lake Library hosts “Discovering Catharine”, “How to Lose a War”

From staff reports

The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host a screening of the new documentary film Discovering Catharine on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 5 pm. The film explores the life and legacy of Catharine Waugh McCulloch (1862-1945) of Evanston, Illinois, an early female attorney and a fervent champion of women’s rights.

Ann McCulloch, the great-granddaughter of Catharine Waugh McCulloch, uncovered Catharine’s memoirs and a trove of documents at Harvard’s Schlesinger Library two decades ago. Her personal journey has culminated in a well-researched documentary, enriched by insights from legal scholars and women’s suffrage historians who have studied Catharine’s profound impact on women’s rights.

On Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7 pm, the Glen Lake Library will host peace scholar and activist David Cortright, who will discuss parallels between the United States’ war in Iraq and the current conflict in Gaza. In the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist assault, President Joe Biden flew immediately to Tel Aviv to express his condolences and pledge American solidarity. He also warned the Israeli government not to repeat the U.S. actions in Iraq, namely waging war rather than pursuing nonmilitary means of countering violent extremism. U.S. and Israeli leaders ignored critics who warned that war would create many innocent victims and would lead to more terrorism, not less. Cortright will explore the lessons learned from these conflicts, and the implications for the Middle East and beyond.
