Knitting and crocheting, long dismissed as home hobby and granny-craft, are at the forefront of the current revolution in fiber arts. As part of its “Fiber Without Borders” exhibition, the Glen Arbor Arts Center (GAAC) will host a screening of the 2016 documentary Yarn,and audience talk-back discussion on Sept. 19 at 7 pm at the Empire Township Hall, 10088 W. Front St., Empire.Yarn is presented in collaboration with the Glen Lake Community Library.

The Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library will their annual used book sale Aug. 7-9 at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. This three-day fundraising event offers gently used books for adults and children in more than 50 categories, games, and puzzles, as well as DVDs and CDs. This year the Friends have an extraordinary selection of beautiful coffee table books. The sale is scheduled as follows:

A special holiday tradition continues on Nov. 17 as the Glen Lake Library in Empire kicks off its annual call for children’s books. The Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Glen Lake School, Parenting Communities and Head Start, are once again collecting donations of new children’s books for children whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season.

The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host child advocate Shenandoah Chefalo on Thursday, Nov. 15. Shenandoah will share her book Garbage Bag Suitcase, a memoir of her challenging childhood within the foster care system.

For 20 years, Michael Buhler was co-editor of the Sun. He designed these pages, adeptly arranged advertisements like Tetris blocks, and placed the stories and photos before you. Mike helped turn this rag into an attractive, full-color newsprint magazine with ads and images that pop, and stories that educate—a true asset of our vibrant community. But no longer. Mike died suddenly on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 16. He leaves a void in our hearts the size of the Manitou Passage.

The Glen Lake Community Library’s annual Used Book Sale will be held at the Glen Arbor Township Hall on August 8-10. At the Preview Party, on Aug. 8 from 6-9 p.m., shoppers can choose from thousands books and have an opportunity to mingle with friends and enjoy delicious appetizers and sweet treats. The cost is $5. The general sale will be on Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The sale will conclude on Friday with a Bag Sale. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., shoppers can purchase a bag for $5 and fill it to the brim with as many books and other items as they can fit in.

The Glen Lake Community Library kicks off building expansion fundraising on Memorial Day weekend at Northwoods Hardware, according to capital campaign chairperson Linda Young. The construction project will transform the present library and will nearly double the space while accommodating the needs of both children and the elderly.

The Glen Lake Library will host a concert by Kora player Sean Gaskell on Friday, May 11, at 7 pm. The Kora is a traditional 21-string harp native to West Africa.
