Preserve offers summer volunteer projects

Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear has several preservation projects and workshops open to volunteers this summer. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, bring basic tools, a bag lunch, water, and dress for the weather. To RSVP please call 231-334-6103 or 334-PARK.

On July 14-16 volunteers will help restore the Kraitz cabin, the oldest structure on the mainland of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Work will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day; take M-22 to S. Bohemian Road. July 21-22 there will be tuck point foundation training and repairs at the Kropp Farmhouse, located on M-22, just west of Good Harbor Rd. Between Aug. 18-28 Preserve will take volunteers to North Manitou Island for a series of preservation projects on Cottage Row. Ferry and housing on the island provided, must come for a minimum of three nights or more. Spots fill up quickly and preference is given to previous volunteers so sign up soon! On Sept. 11 volunteers can help keep Port Oneida beautiful by taking part in an Adopt-a-Highway cleanup along M-22. Meet at 2:30 p.m. at the Olsen Farm, 3164 W. Harbor Hwy (M-22) just three miles north of Glen Arbor.

Port Oneida horse and wagon tours

Horse and wagon tours through the Port Oneida Rural Historic District will be offered every Thursday until Sept. 9, leaving from the Olsen Farm in Port Oneida at 4:30 and 5:45 p.m. The farm is located three miles north of Glen Arbor at 3164 W Harbor HWY (M-22). Rates are $18 per adult, $11 per child ages 4-12, and free for children 3 and under on laps. Reservations are required by calling 231-334-6103. A minimum of eight reservations are needed to conduct a tour.

Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, a nonprofit partner of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, offers programs and opportunities to learn about the history of the Port Oneida farming community and their efforts to preserve the historic structures and landscapes within it.
