Japanese woodblock prints at Lake Street Studios

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

Linda Beeman, an Owosso, Mich., resident specializing in Japanese woodblock printing, exhibits prints of Northern Michigan’s landscape and lakeshores, Aug. 19-Sept. 1 at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The show opens Aug. 19, 6 p.m. with a reception for the artist.

Beeman practices a time-consuming art with ancient roots in Japan. She is one of two professional artists in Michigan practicing mokuhanga, a multi-step process using handcarved printing plates. Beeman prepared for her Center Gallery exhibition by immersing herself in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, sketching, painting and photographing imagery to translate into carved wood blocks from which a limited edition prints are made. Beeman’s work has been exhibited in the United States and Japan.
