Glen Lake Library hosts Kids Summer Camp

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host a kids summer camp for ages 8-9, June 23-27 from 10 am- 1 pm. Activities will include: creative writing, arts and crafts, nature-based activities and games.

The camp is free of charge and presented by the Yingst Family in honor of Bonnie Yingst. Spaces are available for the first 15 children registered. To register, call 231-326-5361.

“The Library Camp is a new venture for us, and an expansion of our summer youth programming,” said director David Diller. “It’s motivated by our long-term goal of forging a stronger connection with area students. Our library strives to be a welcoming destination for kids and families. Our new facility, with an expanded Young Learner’s area, has proven to be a much more attractive and inviting resource. However, our physical distance from the school has always been a challenge. This is compounded by the relatively limited number of students that live within easy access to the library.

“While the Library Camp is of course open to all students, we’re especially focusing on those at Glen Lake Community Schools. In fact, the school is sending registration information directly to parents, so we hope to have a good response. These activities will be supported in part with funds that were donated to the library in memory of Bonnie Sloane Yingst, who passed away on December 24, 2023. She was an accomplished cancer researcher, an avid reader, and a champion of libraries. Her family asked the Glen Lake Community Library be named as a beneficiary for memorial gifts. We received a significant number of gifts and have been exploring various options for applying these funds. The Library Camp is one project that we’ve decided would be appropriate.”

The lineup for kids summer camp includes:

June 23, Welcome to the library: book talks, get library cards, games, STEM kits, and more

June 24, Nature journaling and sketching with Penny Krebiehl

June 25, Writing workshop with Kit Robey

June 26, Meet adorable farm animals with Sue’s Zoo

June 27, Explore the wonders of the human skeleton with Dr. Tammy Coleman
