Glen Arbor Art Association announces art classes

From staff reports

The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) kicks off its 2012 array of art classes for adults and children on June 23. The programs this summer will again provide instruction for beginning to advanced levels in acrylic, oils, watercolors, pastels, and drawing. Many classes will focus on landscape art, reflecting the unique beauty of Leelanau County.

To introduce the program offerings, Ellie Harold will conduct a three-hour workshop June 23 on Goal-Setting for Artists: Take Your Art to the Next Level. She will discuss specific challenges faced by artists, and help bring greater awareness and direction to artistic creation.

The full season will offer these opportunities for artists from near and far:

Landscapes. GAAA’s annual Plein Air at the Farm, taught by Joe Lombardo;
Painting the Landscape with Open Eyes, with Josephine Primeau; Landscape Oils in the Studio, led by Leelanau County’s own Lou Heiser; and Painting Pastel Landscapes en Plein Air, with nationally-known artist Jim Markle. In addition, there are many opportunities to joining a Plein Air Group with no formal instruction.

Photography. The focus on Leelanau County includes a two-day workshop photographing nature in and around Thoreson Farm in the Sleeping Bear Dunes Park, led by Traverse City photographer Tom Kachadurian. Photographing Leelanau County gives student technical discussions, a session in the field, and follow-up with reviews and critiques.

Fall Program. This year’s special fall Homestead Resort workshop will feature Andy Evansen, teaching Creating Impressionistic Landscapes. Evansen is an award-winning artist who has served as president of the Minnesota Watercolor Society. His works have appears in Watercolor Artist, International Artist, and Plein Air magazines.

New Classes. New classes this year include fabric art: Creating Artistic Silk Scarves and The Quilt as Art: Introduction to Non-Traditional, Contemporary Quilt Making, with local artist Deseree Vaugh, and a Figure Sculpture Workshop with Jack Bergeron.

Young Artists. June 25 to August 17 the GAAA’s Young People’s Art Studio offers age-specific classes for children and young adults, including painting, drawing, pottery, and more.
