Glen Arbor Art Association announces 2013 Manitou Music Festival lineup
The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) has announced this year’s Manitou Music Festival lineup of musicians. The highlight will be this year’s Dune CLimb concert, on Sunday, July 14, featuring the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra.
Northport Concert Band – Wednesday, July 3, 7 pm. Get into the July Fourth spirit with the popular Northport Concert Band under the direction of Don Wilcox who will present a program of patriotic musicon the lawn of the Glen Arbor Athletic Club. Bring your lawn chairs, friends and family to catch the spirit of Independence Day music … a Glen Arbor tradition. Free, Glen Arbor Athletic Club Lawn (Rain location: Glen Arbor Town Hall)
Fifteenth annual Dune Climb Concert – Sun., July 14, 7 pm. Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra – Big Band Sound. Several thousand people will gather at the base of the Dune Climb to picnic with friends and enjoy the concert as the sun sets behind the dunes. The premier Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra will present a program of original compositions and big band favorites. Some of the area’s best soloists will be performing, including vocalist, Edye Evans-Hyde. Free (National Park pass required). Sleeping Bear Dunes Nationall Lakeshore. Mulebone – Sunday, July 21, 8 pm. Mulebone (Hugh Pool and John Ragusa) is one of the most straight-ahead, hard-driving blues bands you’ll find anywhere. Mulebone, a mainstay of the Maitou Music Festival, owe their success to the boundless energy and excitement they bring to their performances, and they do it all with guitar, stomp-board, flute and conch! $15 (Children 18 and under are free). THUMMp – Thursday, July 25, 7 pm. THUMMp hails from Detroit, where Classic Rock meets Motown. They bring energy and a unique perspective to a cappella singing. Armed with experience and 5 distinct personalities, THUMMp knows how to entertain. Ride the chairlift or golf cart to the top. Snacks and drinks available for purchase at venue. Nora Jane Struthers – Sunday, July 28, 8 pm. Nora Jane Struthers grew up singing and playing traditional music with her dad, Alan Struthers. She calls her music “Classic Americana… It’s not really bluegrass, it’s not really old time, it’s not folk; it’s all of these things.” Struthers writes literate variations on classic folk themes and sings them with just enough twang to sound authentic rather than academic. $15 (Children 18 and under are free). Drew Nelson and Highway 2 Band – Wed., July 31, 8 pm. Michigan-born Navy veteran Drew Nelson is a storytelling songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. A fly fisherman and world traveler, he writes as a witness to the lives and journeys of those he has met along the way, mixing Americana and roots-rock with traditional folk styles. $15 (Children 18 and under are free). Peter, Paul & Mary Remembered – Sun., August 4, 8 pm. Reviving many of the beloved hits such as “Puff the Magic Dragon” and “If I Had a Hammer,” Lawrence “Doc” Probes, Donna Wilson Probes, Jim Hawley and bassist Dave Swan present a smooth blend of harmonies and 1960’s nostalgia. Launched in 2010, their shows have attracted crowds of both young and old. $15 (Children 18 and under are free). Studio Stage (Rain location: Glen Arbor Town Hall)
Full Set – Wednesday, August 7, 8 pm. Full Set is: Teresa Horgan on vocals, Michael Harrison on fiddle, Seán McCarthy on uilleann pipes, Janine Redmond on button accordion, Eamonn Moloney on bodhrán, and Andy Meaney on guitar. All accomplished young musicians; Full Set creates a unique sound that is energetic, while true to traditional Irish roots. $15 (Children 18 and under are free) Studio Stage (Rain location: Empire Town Hall)
George Cole Quartet – Sunday, August 11, 8 pm. The George Cole Quartet brings to the stage a truly unique evening celebrating the songs of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin with inspiration from gypsy jazz/swing. The quartet is comprised of George on guitar and vocals, French/Argentinean guitarist Mathias Minquet, violinist Stephan Dudash, and Kaili Earle on bass and vocals. $15 (Children 18 and under are free). Summer Singers – Tuesday, August 13, 7 pm. Enjoy an evening with the Summer Singers, an all volunteer group of 60 plus voices, who will present a wide variety of vocal works. This enthusiastic group of mixed voices is directed by the talented Patrick Kuhl who is also the summer organist of the Omena Presbyterian Church. Trina Hamlin co-bill withTrue Falsettos – Wed., August 14, 8 pm. Trina Hamlin is a master of the blues harmonica, as well as an inspired songwriter and guitarist. Trina has entertained MMF audiences over the past seven years with her warm personality and inviting stage presence. The True Falsettos are a swing duo featuring Joe Wilson (Steel Guitar, Guitar, Vocals) and Kevin Gills (Bass, Vocals). $15 (Children 18 and under are free) Leelanau School Green (Rain location: Glen Arbor Town Hall)
