Dune Dash to benefit next phase of Heritage Trail

News

DuneDash4-allen-kent photographyFrom staff reports

The second annual Dune Dash to benefit the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. The 4-mile run/walk starts and finishes at the base of the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb and follows the flat, paved segment of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail to Glen Haven and back.

Register online today. Tickets cost $30 for adults, $20 for teens, $15 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit the continued construction of the trail.

Fundraising for Phase 2 of the Heritage Trail is currently underway, with a goal of $775,000 in private donations, to extend the trail from Glen Arbor to Port Oneida and further north to County Road 669, which will add nearly eight miles of new trail. Donations can be directed to TART Trails either online or by contacting Pam Darling, (231) 941-4300.

This fall, construction will begin on an additional four miles of the trail toward Empire, with an anticipated opening next spring. Pending a successful fundraising outcome, construction of the next eight-mile stretch will begin in the fall of 2014.
