After leaving the decrepit lodge and climbing up the mountain, Jeff Katofsky felt better about his prospects to revive Sugar Loaf—once the economic lifeblood and biggest employer in the county but which has been vacant since 2000.
The Glen Arbor Arts Center (GAAC) spotlights its permanent collection of works by more than 40 artists who have enjoyed a two-week residency in the GAAC’s Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program. The exhibition runs Nov. 9-Dec. 21 at the GAAC, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.

The Leelanau Conservancy’s new three-mile mountain bike trail at Palmer Woods Forest Reserve has officially opened. Nearly 150 people attended an opening ride and party on Sunday, Nov. 4 in cold, wet conditions to ride the first public flow-style mountain bike trail in Leelanau County.

If you stop by one of Cherry Republic’s six Michigan stores on Tuesday morning, don’t be surprise to see a “Gone Voting” sign on the front door. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, all Cherry Republic stores and offices throughout the state will open at 10 a.m.—an hour later than usual—to give staff a chance to exercise their civic duty before reporting to work.

In northern Michigan’s vineyards and orchards, ablaze with fall colors, migrant farmworkers are known to sing corrido ballads and folk songs as they pick grapes and apples from sunrise to sundown. But their voices fell silent this autumn when targeted roadside arrests by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and workplace visits by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) increased starting in late September.

Cherry Republic plans to hire as many as 200 “elves” to help pack and mail approximately 70,000 gift boxes at its Empire distribution and fulfillment center this holiday season. The company will hold a holiday hiring event from 2-6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at its Empire warehouse, located at 9876 Fisher Street.

Robert Kuras, owner of The Homestead, has announced that the historic grist mill and miller’s residence on the banks of the Crystal River in Glen Arbor have been sold to The Mill Glen Arbor, LLC. The acquiring entity is owned and operated by Turner Booth, a Michigan native who has relocated to Glen Arbor to rehabilitate and preserve the historic structures. Turner is a graduate of the University of Michigan and U of M Law School.
