Michael Soukup, recently retired chief scientist for the National Park Service, calls Chickadeeland “a beautiful, delightful introduction to America’s natural wonders.”
Light up Leland for the holidays on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 5:30 p.m. The event begins with the lighting of the tree at Christmas Tree Corner followed by Santa riding in a fire engine to the Village Green where you can enjoy more tree lighting, caroling, treats and time with Santa.

A special holiday tradition continues on Nov. 17 as the Glen Lake Library in Empire kicks off its annual call for children’s books. The Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Glen Lake School, Parenting Communities and Head Start, are once again collecting donations of new children’s books for children whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season.
The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host child advocate Shenandoah Chefalo on Thursday, Nov. 15. Shenandoah will share her book Garbage Bag Suitcase, a memoir of her challenging childhood within the foster care system.
Wayne State University Press just published a collection of creative nonfiction essays and stories by Michigan writers called ELEMENTAL. The collection is edited by Anne-Marie Oomen, an author, poet and teacher who lives in Empire. ELEMENTAL will celebrate its launch at the Glen Arbor Arts Center on Thursday, Nov. 15.
When the Glen Lake Chamber’s annual Pumpkin Festival was moved into the Township Hall due to rain, the swiftest and most accessible messaging—the new Township digital sign—was unavailable. Due to a regrettable dispute about its impact, the sign was turned off. Totally dark! Not to be used.
As of Oct. 29, Glen Arbor’s Dorothy Zboyan has lived for a century! But she’s not your typical little old lady. Yes, she’s little. At one time five feet tall, she’s well below that now. And she’ll be the first to tell you (joyfully) that she’s old. But her thick salt and pepper hair has yet to turn white, she dresses up, speaks with gusto, her memory seems intact, she keeps up with the conversation—and she embraces life.
