Leelanau’s 2018 Election Results

Here is a list of unofficial Leelanau County election results from the Nov. 6, 2018, national midterm election. Canvassing to officialize the results began at 1 p.m. today (Nov. 7) at the Leelanau County Government Center.

• Overall, 71 percent (14,368 of 20173) of eligible Leelanau County voters cast ballots yesterday. The highest percentage was Glen Arbor Township where 76 percent voted.

• Gretchen Whitmer (D), Michigan’s next governor, beat Bill Schuette (R) 6,704 votes to 6,506.

• In the Secretary of State race, winner Jocelyn Benson (D) beat Mary Treder Lang (R) 6,781 votes to 6,679.

• In the Attorney General race, losing candidate Tom Leonard (R) beat winner Dana Nessel (D) 6,780 to 6,424.

• U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D) beat John James (R) 7,089 to 6,655.

• In the race for U.S. Congress, losing candidate Matt Morgan (D) beat incumbent and winner Jack Bergman (R) 7,295 to 6,806.

• State Senator Curt Vanderwall (R) beat Mike Taillard (D) 7,257 to 6,379.

• In the State House race, winner Jack O’Malley (R) beat Kathy Wiejaczka (D) 7,248 to 6,800.

• Tom Eckerle and James Roger Calhoun (Republicans) won the Road Commissioner seats.

• For County Commission, William Bunek (R) beat Lois Bahle (D) 1,061 to 942 in District 3;  Patricia Soutas-Little (D) beat Dale Schaub (R) 1,048 to 885 in District 5; Carolyn Rentenbach (D) beat incumbent Casey Noonan (R) 1,130 to 1,059 in District 6;  Melinda Lautner (R) beat Julie Morris (D) 959 to 792 in District 7. Tony Ansorge (R), Deb Rushton (R) and Ty Wessel (D) ran unopposed.

Leelanau has the same slate of County Commissioners as it did prior to the 2016 election: 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats.

• Marian Kromkowski beat Michael Long, 6,421 to 5,931, for Leelanau County Probate Court Judge.

• Bob Cooney beat Paul Jarboe 7,494 to 3,214 for 86th District Court Judge.

• State Proposal 1 (legalizing marijuana) passed, 7,080 to 6,781.

• State Proposal 2 (against partisan gerrymandering) passed, 8,141 to 5,441.

• State Proposal 3 (same-day voter registration) passed, 8,720 to 5,026.
