Work began today on a new re-sale shop that will help fund assistance for families in need in Leelanau County. A groundbreaking ceremony took place at Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN) for a new Samaritans’ Closet.

The National Park Service (NPS) plans to conduct a prescribed fire in two burn units this spring, and as soon as this week, at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts a reception to honor five Leelanau County painters who followed in the historic footsteps of seven Canadian painters. The result is a visual record of “The Cats on the Prowl: A Superior Adventure.” An exhibition of paintings generated by that 2016 trip are on display at the Glen Arbor Arts Center May 10-26. A reception to meet the artists is Friday, May 10, from 6-8 pm.

The Habitat for Humanity Mother’s Day brunch held annually at The Leelanau School and co-sponsored with Glen Lake Schools is being discontinued. This year Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 12.

Become a Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Ambassador by attending the training scheduled for Saturday, May 11, at 1 pm.

The National Park Service (NPS) plans to conduct a prescribed fire in two burn units the week of May 7 in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This is the first broadcast (wide area) prescribed fire to ever be held at the National Lakeshore and is the start of using fire as a management tool for the years to come.

The Glen Arbor Arts Center offers two classes in May to help re-ignite creative juices: PL*ART Basics on May 4 and Soft Pastel for Beginners on May 14-15.

The Glen Lake Library in Empire will host a groundbreaking ceremony for its library expansion project on Saturday, May 4, at 11 AM.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be hosting its popular annual pruning workshop on Friday, May 3, in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. The workshop will be held at the Kelderhouse farm, four miles north of Glen Arbor on M-22.

Michigan State University Extension will host a pruning workshop on Friday, May 3, from 9 am-12:30 pm at the NW Michigan Horticultural Research Center.
