Leelanau Christian Neighbors, Samaritans’ Closet team up on new site
From staff reports
Work began today on a new re-sale shop that will help fund assistance for families in need in Leelanau County. A groundbreaking ceremony took place at Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN) for a new Samaritans’ Closet.
Samaritans’ Closet has been open for more than 10 years, but has dramatically outgrown its current location. The new building will nearly double its current size, with 3,300 square feet. Proceeds from the shop go to support assistance programs operated by LCN.
“The new store will be a dramatic improvement,” says LCN executive director, Mary Stanton. “It should be easier for people to make donations, and more display space should make it easier for people to shop.” Stanton says the new facility will be centrally located in the county and be easily accessible.
The new construction is planned for completion this fall and is expected to cost about $400,000. A capital campaign is ongoing to help with the improvements. The new building was made possible with the merger of Leelanau Christian Neighbors and Samaritans’ Closet. That merger was announced in January and finalized last month.
Samaritans’ Closet will continue operation at its current Lake Leelanau Drive location until the new building is completed. The store sells clothing, furniture, bedding, household items and a variety of other goods donated by the community.
Leelanau Christian Neighbors began in 1987 and is a collaborative effort of 13 churches in the region. Its mission is to help people dealing with emergencies in their lives. It provides help without regard to age, race or religious beliefs.
