Researcher to discuss Avian Botulism at Sleeping Bear Dunes

Over the past decade, there has been an increased incidence of bird deaths in Lake Michigan due to Type E avian botulism. Over 6,500 dead birds have been documented within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore alone. Scientists from the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have been conducting a collaborative research project to determine the causes of these botulism outbreaks — work that includes underwater research in Good Harbor Bay.

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail ambassadors sought

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail ambassadors help visitors by answering questions, giving directions, and sometimes handing out coupons for Cherry Republic ice cream when they find trail users “Doing Something Right”. Ambassadors are also Friends of Sleeping Bear’s eyes and ears on the trail reporting maintenance or safety issues that need to be resolved.

Lyme disease is emerging across North America and in Michigan as the blacklegged tick that carries the disease invades new areas. You can learn about how scientists are investigating this public health issue by attending a program at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on May 12.

“Lift Every Voice: The Black Experience in the Heartland!”

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore welcomes the Bright Star Touring Theatre of Arden, North Carolina, to the area for two free performances of “Lift Every Voice: The Black Experience in the Heartland.” Everyone is invited to experience this very special production on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the State Theatre in Traverse City, Michigan or at a 6 p.m. performance at the Mills Community House in Benzonia. This play is for everyone, but will be especially enjoyed by youth studying American history.

Adopt-A-Beach Call for Volunteers

Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes will be hosting a kickoff meeting for Adopt-A-Beach volunteers on Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. in the DH Day Log Cabin at DH Day campground. Because of limited parking at the campground, consider parking at Glen Haven and walking to the Log Cabin along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The cabin is about ¼ mile east of Glen Haven and right along the trail.

French art and cuisine in Glen Arbor

Join popular art lecturer Linda Young and favorite Chef Randy Chamberlain for a special event exploring the joie de vivre of French Impressionism on Wednesday, May 18th. A three-course par excellence luncheon at Blu, designed by Chef Randy and inspired by Monet’s recipes at Giverny, will be complimented by a talk at the Glen Arbor Art Association.
