Just before Christmas, Ian Olmsted and a team from Peninsula Solar completed the installation of 70 rooftop solar panels above the Art’s Annex, the former gas station turned t-shirt shop next to the popular tavern in downtown Glen Arbor. The solar array will generate 30,000 kilowatt hours annually —satisfying 15-20 percent of Art’s energy load.

Wings of Wonder is inviting the public to a release of an adult Bald Eagle on Sunday, June 5, at 10 a.m., at Eagle Meadow located at 3805 West Empire Highway (about 6.7 miles east of Empire off of hwy 72).

Out in our meadow beyond the vintage apple trees planted by Irish immigrant potato farmers named Sullivan over a century ago, Don Lessard set up a tripod topped by a round sheet of curved graph paper under a plastic globe. We could see the nearby trees and hills reflected upside down in the globe, and Don traced the shadow lines on the graph paper as he said, “This is a great spot for a solar panel!” He then sent the graph and our energy use information to his son Ambrose down in Lansing, and from GPS data and records of sunshine in Leelanau County recorded over many years, they calculated the size of the solar panel needed to produce the kilowatts we require to cover our annual electric needs.

Wings of Wonder invites the public to its next raptor release scheduled for Sunday. Dec. 14 3 p.m. at the Grand Traverse Area Veterans Memorial Park. The Empire-based organization will release a beautiful young female Bald Eagle in honor of our area veterans of war. Several area nonprofit organizations have been invited to attend including A Matter of Honor, Veterans for Peace and Military Working Dog Team Support Association. The public is welcome to attend. Wings of Wonder invites the public to its next raptor release at Little Traverse Inn, north of Glen Arbor on M-22. Three young Eastern Screech Owls will be released on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. A trio of attendees will have the opportunity to do the actual release.

What better way to celebrate the birth of our nation than to witness its symbol flying free? It’s everything you feel when you think about our country. The United States chose the Bald Eagle as its representative: strong, majestic, a fierce competitor.

Guests and club members at The Homestead will be treated to a series of free nature-based programs this summer with “The Wonders of Raptors” by Rebecca Lessard of Wings of Wonder. The programs will be offered in the Camp Tamarack amphitheatre.

Rebecca Lessard and Wings of Wonder will release a large Bald Eagle on Saturday, May 28 at the Empire Eagle’s Club property (the old Dunegrass Festival field) eight miles east of Empire, on M-72. The public is invited to attend this grand event, which begins at 11 a.m.
