A color wheel book in three dimensions

Have you seen the beautiful rainbows spinning outside the Sleeping Bear Gallery in Empire this summer? Last year, owner Heather Caverly acquired a patent on the 3D Colorwheel Book, which she hopes will turn the traditional wheel into a fun and accessible tool to enhance learning for kids of all ages. She will take her invention to Art Prize in Grand Rapids this month, and hopes to one day sell the colorwheel book at her gallery.

Ripple effect at Sleeping Bear Gallery

Oil Painter Jeff Ripple will demonstrate his craft at Empire’s Sleeping Bear Gallery on Saturday, July 27, from 1-3 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Ripple may be “a Florida boy at heart,” but he also embraces the idyllic rolling hills and gentle landscape that characterizes Leelanau County. Even though Ripple is colorblind, he has “always been into art.”

Sleeping Bear Gallery owner Heather Caverly hopes to bring an art revolution to Empire. Caverly purchased the Empire Clipper Building across Front Street from the Village Office in January and, together with curator Becky Willis, she aims to turn it into a haven that features artists in residence, demonstrations and lectures and, of course, displays of unique art including metals, wood, glass, fibers, paintings, sculptures, ceramics and photography. Caverly and her husband Mark live in the apartment upstairs.
