Painters from across Michigan and the Midwest will converge on Glen Arbor, August 1-3, for the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 11thPlein Air Weekend. This annual event is highlighted by three outdoor painting competitions that offer participants both daytime and sundown events; and two exhibits of original work.

The ninth annual Plein Air Weekend is August 2-5 in Glen Arbor. The event, a project of the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA), offers a weekend of painting events for artists, that culminates in two exhibitions.
On Saturday evening, Aug. 6, artists gathered for a thank-you dinner given by the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) before the Plein Air Paint Out Wet Painting Sale Reception. Art lovers began to arrive at 5 p.m. to line-up to view the art work that culminated the weekend’s events. The GAAA was filled with over 300 art patrons and artists enjoying a lovely evening.
The Plein Air Weekend, organized by the Glen Arbor Art Association, has become a signature summer art event attracting plein air artists and art lovers from throughout Michigan and the Midwest. Three painting events and two art sales will highlight the paintings of over 100 artists who will paint throughout the Glen Lake area Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. Competition for a spot in the main event, Saturday’s Plein Air Paint Out, is always keen and this year’s event filled in just 90 minutes in late March.

At about 4 p.m. on Saturday evening, Aug. 1, more than 60 artists gathered for a thank-you dinner given by the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) before the Plein Air Paint Out Wet Painting Sale Reception. Art lovers began lining up at 5 to view the artwork that culminated the weekend’s events. The GAAA was filled with close to 300 art patrons and artists enjoying a lovely evening. Who would ever imagine that fewer than 24 hours later Glen Arbor would be hit by a megastorm that ravaged Leelanau County. That evening was literally the calm before the storm.
“Artists at Work” signs will be spotted around the Glen Arbor area on Saturday, Aug. 1, as 60 pre-registered artists participate in the Glen Arbor Art Association’s seventh annual Paint Out. After an early morning check-in to stamp canvases or papers verifying that their paintings have been completed on that day, the artists will fan out to find the perfect vista and set up for a day of painting and sketching to paint “en plein air”.
