Glen Arbor Art Center’s Plein Air Weekend returns for 10th year
From staff reports
Painters from across Michigan and the Midwest converge on Glen Arbor August 2-4 for the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 10th Plein Air Weekend. This annual event is highlighted by three outdoor painting competitions that offer participants both daytime and sundown events; and two exhibits of original work.
The Sundowner, an evening painting event, gets the Plein Air Weekend started on Thursday, Aug. 2, beginning at 8 p.m. Then, on Friday, Aug. 3 artists paint in historic Glen Haven from 2-4 p.m. during the Quick Draw. The public is welcome to watch the artists in action. Finished Sundowner and Quick Draw paintings will be on view and for sale at the Glen Arbor Town Hall, 6394 W. Western Avenue/M-22, from 5-6:30 pm. Glen Arbor artist Becky Thatcher of Becky Thatcher Jewelry Design will judge the Quick Draw entries. There will be cash prizes.
The weekend’s culminating event, the Paint Out Sale, features work by 65 artists who registered early to be included in this all-day painting event. The evening viewing and sale is 5:30-7:30 pm at the Glen Arbor Town Hall. The paintings are complemented by an appetizer/wine reception. More than 100 works of art will be exhibited, and offered for sale on a first-come basis (at the sound of the gong at 5:45). Frankfort studio artist Ellie Harold will judge and award cash prizes for the best paintings. A People’s Choice Award will also be given. The evening’s show and sale is a ticketed exhibition. Tickets are $15 [before August 1]; or $20 at the door. To reserve tickets early, visit GlenArborArt.org.
