Remembering Michael Buhler, a man of impeccable taste, curiosity and talent

For 20 years, Michael Buhler was co-editor of the Sun. He designed these pages, adeptly arranged advertisements like Tetris blocks, and placed the stories and photos before you. Mike helped turn this rag into an attractive, full-color newsprint magazine with ads and images that pop, and stories that educate—a true asset of our vibrant community. But no longer. Mike died suddenly on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 16. He leaves a void in our hearts the size of the Manitou Passage.

The Glen Arbor community, family and friends, and the braintrust of the Glen Arbor Sun newspaper are devastated by the sudden passing, Aug. 16, of H. Michael Buhler, who died of a heart attack. He was 57 years young.

Cherry Republic teams up with Leelanau School on workforce housing solution

A shortage of low-cost housing led Cherry Republic and The Leelanau School to enter into a beneficial partnership in recent days. The Cochran Dormitory on Leelanau School’s campus is being renovated through a $30,000 donation from Cherry Republic which will turn it into a desirable and affordable summer lodging option for employees who work for Cherry Republic and other area businesses.

Manitou Winds concert sets reflective mood for holiday season

Upcoming Event

Local chamber ensemble Manitou Winds will present a special encore performance of its “Winter Songs & Carols” concert on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor, as part of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival. Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be taken to benefit arts programs at The Leelanau School and future recording projects for Manitou Winds.

At one time, it was lovely and serene. “We begin in a peaceful place in the woods among the tall timber and wildflowers of Leelanau County,” wrote author Leonard G. Overmyer in his 1999 book Forest Haven Soldiers: The Civil War Veterans of Glen Lake & Surrounding Leelanau. “A site, by Forest Haven Road and M-22, where lies the old Glen Arbor Township Cemetery. It was used primarily in the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s for the early pioneers of the area. This quiet location holds the final resting-place of several Civil War soldiers.”

Iranian Arya Khoshnegah recalls his escape to the Leelanau School

The Leelanau School featured a special graduation speaker during its commencement ceremony on June 3. Alum Arya Khoshnegah, together with his sister Laila, left Iran as teenagers and enrolled at the private boarding school north of Glen Arbor, just before the 1979 revolution that changed the fortunes of their family and their country. Leelanau, which specializes in experiential learning and small class sizes in a beautiful setting, graduated 19 seniors who hail from 11 states. Distinguished alumni have included survivors of wars and natural disasters, children of statesmen and accomplished actors.
