“Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.” Those are the prescient, portending words of Gertrude Stein, the American 20th century expatriate, novelist, art pioneer, and culturalist extraordinaire. Her words are still deeply salient—a century later. Divisiveness is easy currency—globally, nationally, locally. We have become, regrettably, media saturated and disconnected. The Leelanau Community Cultural Center at the Old Art Building (“OAB”) in Leland, most fortuitously, has provided a counterpoint — an antidote of sorts — to this malaise: the Blue Lantern Tea Room program — a reimagination of the historic, communal salon experience.

The opening reception for the 29th annual Art Leelanau benefit art exhibition and sale takes place at the Old Art Building in Leland on Friday, July 23, from 5-8 p.m. The show highlights the work of more than 80 artists with connections to Leelanau County and covers a range a mediums. Proceeds support both the Leelanau Community Cultural Center’s (LCCC) general operations fund and the many artists who live full or part-time in Leelanau County. The exhibit will continue through Wednesday, July 28.

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center (LCCC) and Little Garden Club of Leland are co-sponsoring an exhibit and sale of “Art of the Garden” at the Old Art Building. The show will run June 24-27 from 11 am–5 pm. This exhibit will feature artwork of the flora and fauna of gardens in a variety of mediums.

More than 350 middle and high school art students from around Leelanau County are currently utilizing paper mache masks to create artworks that reflect their individual responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. An exhibit of these works will take place at the Old Art Building in Leland in May, which is National Mental Health Month. The exhibition dates will be May 16-May 27.

Leelanau Community Cultural Center, in collaboration with the Little Garden Club, will hold a virtual/online presentation of the Art of the Garden Exhibit and Sale. This exhibit will feature artwork of the flora and fauna of the garden from artists in a variety of mediums at OldArtBuilding.com. The show will open with an Earlybird preview and sale on June 25 at 3 pm. Tickets for the Earlybird sale are $25 and available at MyNorthTickets.com.

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center is thrilled to announce the VIRTUAL Leland Air Exhibition. “Leland Air: a plein air event” is celebrating its eighth year, albeit with a new twist due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Paintings in the show will be created ​en plein air​ on Friday, May 22. Since this is a virtual paint-out, artists may still be at their stay-at-home locations anywhere in the country.

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center sponsors its 19th annual Fiber Festival on Friday, Oct. 11, from 5:30-7:30 pm and Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 from 10 am-4 pm at the Old Art Building in Leland. Artists with original fiber art will exhibit and sell their work in mediums of wearable art, textiles, weaving, art quilts, fiber sculpture, knits and yarns.

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center will host the second annual Leland Musical Arts Celebration on September 14 at 7:30 pm. The initial idea for Leland Musical Arts Celebration was raised by local resident and oboist, Mezraq Ramli. He envisioned an evening of classical music highlighting musicians from across the country and even the world.

Don’t miss the Old Art Building’s eighth annual Labor Day weekend FREE “Concert on the Lawn” in Leland. K. Jones and the Benzie Playboys bring the roots of southwest Louisiana’s Creole, Cajun, and Zydeco music to the Old Art Building on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7 pm. Bring chairs, blankets and your dancing shoes—Beer, wine, and cider will be available for purchase. No coolers please.
