The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program offers two-week residencies for practicing artists who would like the opportunity for focused, creative exploration. Residencies are considered in writing, photography, sculpture, fiber, ceramics, music, painting, philosophy and creative research. Public presentations are an opportunity for the artist-residents to talk about their experience in Leelanau County, and share insights into their residency.
Singer-songwriter Blake Elliott makes some of her signature music at the Glen Arbor Art Association’s next “Talk About Art” interview. This versatile musician writes the music — a rich fusion of funk/blues/indie folk — and the lyrics she sings. Elliott, a Traverse City resident, creates music inspired by the natural beauty of her home and “this big adventure called ‘Life.’” Her instrument of choice is the guitar, and she and Talk About Art host Sarah Bearup-Neal will talk about how it’s helping her make her way through a maze of concert dates and the brave new world of recorded music.

The Glen Arbor Art Association, The Homestead resort and the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail will again team up to offer Art From Michigan’s Wine Country on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at The Homestead’s Mountain Flowers Lodge. Now in its sixth year, this fun winter event kicks off Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail’s Taste the Passion weekend. The Friday night GAAA benefit features wine from Leelanau wineries, original art exhibits and sales by local artists and a small plates menu designed by Chef Piombo.
The Glen Arbor Art Association recently announced that Jack Conners will take over the production of the Manitou Music Festival. In recent years, Conners took over managing the sound for the series where he worked closely with outgoing director Harry Fried. Conners has built a successful career in the music world and began his career in 1973 as recording engineer for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Over the years he has mixed concert sound for Stan Kenton, The Mills Brothers and Grover Washington, Jr.
Michigan Upper Peninsula resident Paul Rose comes downstate next month for a two-week winter residency with the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA). Rose, a painter and photographer, begins his Artist-in-Residence (AIR) stay Jan. 12. He’ll talk about his work and experiences during the residency at a public presentation on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the GAAA, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.

Glen Arbor Art Association’s “Readers’ Theater” begins its 2013-2014 season with a tour de force production of Notorious, directed by veteran actor, director and co-chair of Readers’ Theater, Josephine Zara, and featuring the area’s talented thespians. “The fun and the satisfaction for me in directing at Readers’ Theater is in witnessing the tremendous growth of our community actors’ skills.” she says.
