Schedule for the 2016 Anchor Day Festival in Empire, Michigan.

When the conversation turns to how the arts are represented in a community, one might point to a museum within the city’s limits; or to a restored movie theater where art house films are screened alongside blockbusters. Those are outward, bricks-and-mortar symbols of a community’s cultural life. But what, then, are the less visible characteristics of a community in which the arts are an integral part?

Balloons will adorn the doors of two Empire galleries, one local studio and the Empire Town Hall for “Art in Empire!” — a brand new art event sponsored by Leelanau Women Artists (LWA). Scheduled for the weekend of June 24-26, the occasion kicks off Friday evening with a grand opening at the town hall, where seven local women artists will unveil their Leelanau-inspired work. Wine and appetizers will add a welcome to the Friday night affair. Look for balloons at Sleeping Bear Gallery and The Secret Garden on Front Street, and JoJo and Bucky on M-22 as well (JoJo and Bucky is a new working studio by pencil artist Jim Hilton and jeweler Becky Willis).

The Glen Lake Library will host a presentation by author and storyteller Terry Wooten, on Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Wooten is the founder and host of the Stone Circle, located north of Elk Rapids, a popular Northern Michigan summer tradition dedicated to the art of storytelling. His latest book, The Stone Circle Poems, was selected as a 2016 Michigan Notable Book. His appearance at the library will be part of a state-wide tour of Notable authors.
