In acknowledgement of the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay will host special showings of the documentary “RBG” and the bio-pic “On the Basis of Sex” on September 24 and October 1.
The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay will reopen for showings on five weekends this summer. Upcoming movies include: “Jaws” July 10-12; “E.T.” July 17-19, “Jurassic Park” July 24-26, “Field of Dreams” July 31-August 2, and “School of Rock” August 7-9. Friday and Saturday showings start at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 4:30 p.m. All tickets cost $3. Seating is limited to 50 people per showing. Visit TheBayTheatre.com for information.
Erik and Bob Bahle called for help, and the Suttons Bay community answered. The Bahle family, who have owned the Bay Theatre since 1976, held a public forum on December 11 in hopes that someone would step forward and continue to operate Leelanau County’s only movie house. The Bahles announced that they were retiring from the movie business at the end of this year.
The morning heat was starting to sizzle as I escaped into the shade of the woods. I was just south of Suttons Bay on the TART trail pedaling north towards a dunk in the lake and a hearty breakfast. Dappled sun bounced off the clean pavement ahead as I shifted gears for more speed, energized by a cool breeze and the sight of the exit for Hop Lot.
On June 28 from 6-11 p.m. the Michael Chetcuti Foundation will hold a Suttons Bay Pride event hosted by 9 Bean Rows in partnership with The Bay Theatre and Up North Pride. The evening will include food, drinks, film, and engaging discussion. A portion of the proceeds benefits Up North Pride.
The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay is pleased to announce the new season of the Bay Film Series 2014-2015. The program offers a fine selection of award-winning films from around the world which have played at international film festivals in the United States and abroad. The series runs September through April and features one film per month—that’s eight great films you won’t want to miss.
The Bay Film Series presents “The Rocket” February 9-11 at The Bay Theatre in downtown Suttons Bay. This award-winning film from Laos/Thailand features 10-year-old Ahlo who is targeted by his grandmother to be a symbol of bad luck to his family and village. After disaster strikes his family he struggles to hold the trust of his father as they are forced off their land. Ahlo leads a misfit band of relatives and friends on a journey across a beautiful landscape once ravaged by war as he seeks to prove his goodness and find his family’s respect.
The Bay Film Series begins its new season of foreign films this Sunday, Sept. 15, with “Renoir” a biographical drama about famous French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Set on the French Riviera in 1915, a young and radiantly beautiful young woman enters the life of the aging artist capturing his attention, as well as that of his son, Jean’s. She becomes Renoir’s last model.
The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay’s Bay Film Series presents I Wish by Japanese director Hirokazu KORE-EDA, playing Dec. 9-11. Two young brothers have been separated by their parents’ divorce and wish to reunite their family. When a new bullet train is launched which will link their two towns, they believe a miracle will happen as the high-speed trains first pass each other, so they hatch a plan to meet and make their wishes come true. This is a sweet and hopeful journey; a life adventure taken through the eyes and hearts of children.
