Storm Struck book sale benefits Re-Arbor Glen Arbor, Friends of Sleeping Bear

From staff reports

The public is invited to buy their copy of Storm Struck: When Supercharged Winds Slammed Northwest Michigan and help cash-strapped private Glen Arbor property owners tidy up their property and replant trees in the wake of a fierce Aug. 2 storm.

Mission Point Press will sell its new book, Storm Struck, at the Glen Arbor Township Hall, on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 3-5 p.m. The Traverse-City based publisher will donate $4 of every book sold to the Re-Arbor Glen Arbor campaign and $1 to Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, a volunteer group that maintains the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and removes weakened trees.

Re-Arbor Glen Arbor quickly formed in early August after violent winds of up to 100 miles per hour ripped through parts of northwest Michigan, uprooting and snapping thousands of trees. Glen Arbor and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore were particularly hard hit, with the storm taking down magnificent and historic trees like matchsticks.

Alligator Hill, roadways and parts of the Heritage Trail were pounded and left impassable, although most were cleared within a few weeks. The sounds of chainsaws in the hardest hit areas continue now, nearly three months after the storm, as well as the sounds of hammers with the repair and rebuilding of damaged homes and outbuildings.

“This event will be a tremendous help to private property owners who have already had to cover the significant cost of tree removal and cleanup,” said Bob Sutherland, president of Cherry Republic.

Storm Struck author Bob Campbell, a former Detroit Free Press editor, will
moderate a panel of storm experts. He’ll also field questions and answers from the audience. The event starts at 3 p.m.

Now entering its third printing, Storm Struck was published 56 days after the storm thanks to more than 100 people donating photos in exchange for a free book. Mission Point Press, Cherry Republic and Utopia Foundation are sponsoring the Oct. 25 event.

Re-Arbor Glen Arbor, formed by Bob Sutherland of Cherry Republic, has already raised more than $45,000, enough to remove tree debris from the main roadways of Glen Arbor and to replant trees. The money raised from the event will go toward assisting private landowners who lack the means to clean up their property.

Copies of the 108-page book (retail price $22.50) will be available at the book event for a discounted price of $20, which includes tax.
