League of Women Voters hosts Selma film
From staff reports
The Big Picture: Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot hosted by the League of Women Voters Leelanau County returns to the Old Art Building at 111 Main Street in Leland on Monday, October 19 at 4 PM. This 40-minute film is the true story of the forgotten heroes in the fight for voting rights—the courageous students and teachers of Selma, Alabama, who stood up against injustice despite facing intimidation, arrests and violence. By organizing and marching bravely, these change-makers achieved one of the most significant victories of the civil rights era. The film and its lessons are crucial reminders that each of us has the ability to bring about powerful social change and the responsibility to participate in our democracy.
There is no fee for the movie but good will donations to the LWVLC will be accepted. You may bring refreshments to share. No alcohol allowed. The Big Picture features films of public interest on current political/environmental and/or social justice topics from October through March.
