Empire residents consider Village Transportation Plan

In our July 11 issue we profiled Jane Fortune of Leland for her work discovering female artists of the Italian Renaissance, many of whom are described in her book, Invisible Women. Fortune’s work, for which she just received an Emmy, inspired our effort to showcase the work of female photographers on the Leelanau Peninsula.
Empire Emergency Fund Concert honors wandering poet Clive Haswell
NewsThe next Empire Area Community Emergency Fund Concert will be held on Sunday, July 28 from 4-6 p.m. at the Empire Township Hall. This event will pay tribute to the “Wanderer” the late hobo poet Clive W. Haswell, and will feature a performance by the Beach Bards with musical guests Norm Wheeler, Chris Skellenger, Patrick Niemisto and friends.
Sleepy Bear Twilight Ride supports Heritage Trail maintenance
Upcoming EventCherry Republic and Friends of Sleeping Bear report the first annual Sleepy Bear Twilight Ride, at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, to support maintenance of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. All funds raised will go toward trail operations, which include keeping the trail clear for riders during the spring, summer and fall, and grooming in the winter for cross-country skiing. Annual maintenance of the trail costs about $1,000 per mile.
Dune Dash to benefit next phase of Heritage Trail
NewsThe second annual Dune Dash to benefit the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. The 4-mile run/walk starts and finishes at the base of the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb and follows the flat, paved segment of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail to Glen Haven and back.
