Terry Gretzema stepped down in March after serving as Glen Arbor Township’s Treasurer for 15 years.

On Sunday, May 26, at 1 pm, M. Christine Byron and Thomas R. Wilson—authors of Historic Leelanau: Recognized Sites and Places of Historical Significance (Leelanau Press, $20) will visit the Cottage Book Shop on Lake Street in Glen Arbor.

In celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the League of Women Voters Michigan in April 2019 and passage of the 19th Amendment in 2020, the Leelanau League will feature Elaine Weiss, author of The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote as the keynote speaker on May 22.

“If you haven’t read Kathleen Stocking, you don’t know Leelanau.” So it is a great gift she gives us with her new book, Gathering Light—another collection of essays focused on the Leelanau but informed by almost 30 additional years of observing nature, participating in community, reading voraciously, traveling bravely, and endlessly pondering life on earth—from our little Up North paradise as it evolved through time to our place in the universe.

Two popular area trails—the Leelanau Trail and the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail—were among this year’s inaugural picks for the Pure Michigan Trail and Trail Town designation program.

A developer working on behalf of Dollar General has withdrawn its offer to purchase three lots from the Flaska family in Maple City, realtor Deb Brown confirmed to the Glen Arbor Sun. Brown, who represents the family, said the offer was withdrawn on Friday, May 10.

On Thursday, May 9, a series of seiches impacted Fishtown, dramatically raising the Leland River. Seiches are common but the higher water levels this year make the docks and shanties more likely to flood.

The idea of opening a small market in Empire dawned on Mae Stier last spring after Deering’s Market closed. Shuttered was a lifeblood business in this close-knit town. For decades, community members had come to Deering’s to buy food and daily provisions, to cross paths and interact.

The Glen Arbor Arts Center is hosting a yarn bomb Maker Day on Sunday, May 19, from 1-3 pm at the GAAC, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. This is one of several Makers Days leading up to a September 15 yarn bombing/installation at the GAAC.
