Fishtown water rising

News

From staff reports

On Thursday, May 9, a series of seiches impacted Fishtown, dramatically raising the Leland River. Seiches are common but the higher water levels this year make the docks and shanties more likely to flood. This photo is of the historic Morris Shanty and its dock. The shanty is from 1903 and is more susceptible to high water because it is still at its historic height. Fishtown Preservation plans to replace the docks and raise this and other shanties as part of a site-wide project.

A June 21 Shanty Aid fundraising event is planned for Leland’s Fishtown, which needs critical infrastructure work.
