Leland Old Art Building hosts Art of the Garden Exhibit
NewsThe Leelanau Community Cultural Center (LCCC) and Little Garden Club of Leland are co-sponsoring an exhibit and sale of “Art of the Garden” at the Old Art Building. The show will run June 24-27 from 11 am–5 pm. This exhibit will feature artwork of the flora and fauna of gardens in a variety of mediums.
Keith Burnham, Biscuit, and The Leland Report
NewsKeith Burnham, with his great love of the charming village of Leland, and its accompanying historic Fishtown, lives by the words, “Every day’s a joy, and some days are more joyous than others…” And that right in his own special place. He has been taking photos of this area for well over five decades. Keith’s constant companion was his dog Biscuit. His daily photos turned into the blog the Leland Report, and the Report and Biscuit came to have followers in every state in the nation as well as from all over the world.
Leland Township Library launches summer children’s program
NewsOn Friday, June 18, at 10:30 a.m., Leland Township Library will kick off its summer children’s program with Leelanau locals Patrick Niemisto and Norm Wheeler of Luunappi as part of its 2021 Children’s Summer Reading Program. The word “luunappi” is Finnish for a finger snap to the ear. To Niemisto and Wheeler, it also means music and rhyme and tall tales. Join Luunappi for a morning filled with songs, stories, and poems for families on the turtleback in front of the library.
Sugar Loaf demolition to begin this summer
NewsThe Sugar Loaf Resort property owner announced today that Taplin Enterprises has been awarded the demolition contract for the former ski resort property. This project is scheduled to begin the last week of June and conclude in October.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore breaks record for May visitors
NewsMore than 110,000 visitors flocked to Sleeping Bear Dunes last month—a new May record. The National Lakeshore has attracted 237,257 visitors through the first five months of 2021. That’s nearly 90,000 more than the first five months of 2020, when Sleeping Bear set a record for annual visitation with more than 1.7 million guests.
Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts “Feed Me! A Word Feast”

Livelys expand farm, launch Backyard Burdickville campground

NewsLeelanau Cheese founders John and Anne Hoyt have found successor cheesemakers Gary Smith and Joshua Hall to continue to produce their award winning, handcrafted raclette and fromage blanc cheeses upon their retirement. The sale of Leelanau Cheese Company—announced Saturday in a press release—includes all property, equipment, inventory, recipes and formulas at their location on M-22 south of Suttons Bay.
