Sugar Loaf demolition to begin this summer

From staff reports

Update: An initial press release sent on June 14 by Envirologic reported that Sugar Loaf demolition would commence in late June. The company issued a later press release stating the project would begin this summer and conclude in the fall.

The Sugar Loaf Resort property owner announced today that Taplin Enterprises, LLC (Taplin), headquartered in Kalamazoo, has been awarded the demolition contract for the former ski resort property. Taplin offers a broad range of services and has a rich history of experience and proven expertise in the environmental services and demolition industry. During the selection process, it became evident by the owners that Taplin had the experience, capabilities and mindset to not only conduct the work effectively, but also to do it in a way that respects the local residents and community. The contract includes the demolition of the main resort/hotel, as well as several buildings and structures on the mountain and surrounding areas. Additionally, general site cleanup will occur in and around the resort and associated resort properties.

Taplin has a long history and proven expertise in the environmental services and demolition industry throughout the Midwest. The firm also performed initial material cleanup work at the property earlier this year.

The demolition is scheduled to begin later this summer and conclude in the fall. The first tasks of the project will include securing the main resort buildings and obtaining the necessary permits and approvals for the project. Throughout the demolition process, all materials will be managed appropriately, including transporting, disposing and recycling materials off site. After demolition, each project area will be backfilled, restored to area grade and seeded.

Envirologic, a full-service environmental consulting firm based in Kalamazoo, will oversee the demolition project on behalf of the owner. Envirologic has over 30 years of experience managing projects of this type, has conducted extensive work on this site and in the community and has developed strong relationships with local officials.

All materials will be managed appropriately throughout the demolition process and will be recycled where possible.

The property, which remains privately held and is not open to the public in any manner, was purchased by its current owner in November of 2020.

“Careful consideration and evaluation was made in setting the stage for demolishing and cleaning up the property,” said Ross Satterwhite, who represents the owner in the planning and execution of demolition activities. “We look forward to the successful implementation of the demolition program and finally eliminating an attractive nuisance and eyesore in this community. We are also very appreciative of the support from the township, county officials and residents.”

“Taplin is a very experienced company that has the capabilities and team to execute the work effectively and in a manner that will be respectful and considerate of local residents. The owner is looking forward to the completion of the work and finally eliminating what sadly had become an unattractive nuisance and eyesore in the community. We are also very appreciative of the ongoing support received from the township, county officials and neighboring residents during this process.”
