Thousands of “No Kings: Nationwide Day of Defiance” demonstrations are planned throughout the United States for Saturday, June 14 — including a sign and flag-waving silent rally at the Glen Lake Narrows on M-22 from 10:30 am-1 pm.
“Please stand in solidarity and join us on this nationwide day of peaceful affirmation of our right to due process, free speech and equal protection,” say Nancy Janulis and Linda Dewey, organizers of the Glen Arbor event.
National organizers describe the No Kings protests as “a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from President Trump and his allies.”
A core principle behind No Kings events, say organizers, is a commitment to nonviolent action. They expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with counter protestors or those who disagree with their values.
“We’ve watched as they’ve cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.”
June 14 is also known as Flag Day, during which Trump will watch a massive military parade in Washington, D.C.
According to the website, Mobilize.us, No Kings rallies will also be held in Suttons Bay at 10 am, and Traverse City at noon, with events also planned in nearby Benzonia at 1 pm, Elk Rapids at 11 am, Bellaire at 11 am, Cadillac at 10 am, and Manistee at 4:30 pm.
Organizers of the event at the Glen Lake Narrows advise those seated in folding chairs and those standing alongside M-22 to stay off the highway and not block traffic or the sidewalk. Peaceful protesters and flag wavers on the Narrows bridge must remain on the shoulders and stand along the causeway.
Parking is available along M-22 or on the Little Glen Lake (west) side north of the bridge. Additional parking is available along M-22.
Attendees are encouraged to bring signs, flags, folding chairs, sunscreen (or umbrellas), water, extra posters and markers (if possible) for anyone who wishes to join last minute.
Those making signs can meet at 10:15 on the Little Glen side of M-22 parking near the Narrows Marina. This is the time to share any additional flags, poster boards and markers. The signs and flag-waving rally will run from 10:30-noon along M-22 at the Narrows on Glen Lake.
Messages that people are encouraged to write on their signs include: “NO KINGS IN AMERICA!”, “THE PEOPLE UNITED”, “I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG”!”, “LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!” “FREEDOM FROM TYRANNY!” “MAKE AMERICA FREE AGAIN!”
