Maple City hosts elite collegiate soccer scrimmages

To all soccer aficionados, on Thursday, August 15, at 1 pm at Myles Kimmerly Park near Maple City there will be a NCAA division 1 exhibition soccer match. University of Virginia (UVA) v. Illinois. This is a great opportunity for the youth of this area and coaches to watch pregame preparation (noon) and match play. Following the match, there will be additional training including a series of set pieces in the offensive third followed by kicks from the mark. The match is free and open to the public. Bring a blanket or chair.

UVA has produced several professional and national team players, including members featured on the recent World Cup winners team (center back Becky Sauerbrunn, Emily Sonnett, and Morgan Brian). Virginia’s coach Steve “Swannie” Swanson is also an assistant coach on the US Women’s National Team, and head coach of the USWNT under-20 team.
