Leelanau ice caves unsafe to visit

From staff reports

Tom Skowronski from Leelanau County’s Office of Emergency Management sent an email this morning to Northern Michigan media, warning that ice caves on Gill’s Pier Road between Leland and Northport are no longer safe to visit.

“It has become imperative we let everyone know these caves are now VERY UNSAFE,” wrote Skowronski. “The winds have moved the ice and we have open water within feet of the caves. There are now large cracks in the arches and they are expected to start collapsing soon. The melting and ice shifts have rendered the area unsafe, please do not enter onto the ice.”
